You Earned Your Degree, Now What?

Fastcubes gathers up some job searching and career advice for a new class of office professionals

With graduation in full swing, we thought it was the perfect time to gather up our best advice for recent college graduates entering the job market so that they can begin their road to becoming the next Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, or whatever office powerhouse they choose.

Jill Schlesinger from Money Magazine wrote last week that it comes down to three important things, a good attitude, strong networking skills, and an insatiable thirst for knowledge.

In today’s digital world, networking doesn’t have to be as dreaded as it sounds.  If you already landed a job, as you get to know your coworkers, connect with them on LinkedIn.  They will eventually serve as references, forward your resume for an open position, or direct you to positions at other companies, Schlesinger writes.  The relationships and network you build now will be an invaluable resource in the future as you progress through your career.

You put in hours of studying to pass your college courses and earn your degree so when you finally land that dream job after tucking your cap and gown away, your thirst for knowledge should not end.

Ask your supervisor for feedback regularly to make sure that you are not only meeting their expectations but exceeding them, Schlesinger suggests.

If you don’t have that perfect job waiting for you just yet, don’t worry.

In her book, Lean In for Graduates, Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer for Facebook, has some important advice for you.

She writes, “Adopt the Mantra, Proceed and be Bold.”  Sandberg says apply for jobs even when you don’t meet all of the criteria.

Another one of her tips suggests to the new job seeker to shift their focus from thinking about what a company can do for them but rather thinking what they can do for the company.

“Putting the company’s needs front and center is really what gets you noticed,” Sandberg wrote.

Above all else she writes on her site, Leanin.org, “As you shift from college to the workplace, your inner voice can serve as a powerful guide. It’s okay to freak out, worry, and wonder as you make the transition into the real world, but don’t let the opinions and voices of others drown out your own. Once you start tuning into what you think and feel, and what you truly care about, you can begin to forge your own path.”
